Amanda Leen

Singer

Amanda Leen was born on 27 May 1981 in Leeds, in the United Kingdom. She grew up in a Catholic family where faith mattered, and where music naturally accompanied some family and religious moments. From an early age her artistic sense was not limited to singing: she liked to draw, to make things, and she was drawn to sculpture. She learned the piano, then truly discovered the pleasure of singing in her school choirs in Leeds. What began as one activity among others slowly became an important part of her life.

From Leeds to London

Amanda then continued her studies in London. She kept singing, in choirs and in the churches her Catholic faith brought her to. For years her voice developed far from the music industry: no record label, no television, no big stages, and no particular wish to build a public career. She sang because she liked to sing. People heard her at weddings, birthdays and private events. Those who listened knew her talent. It stayed private.

Amanda is not a media professional, and she is not a professional of the vocal studio. She does not like being exposed, on television or anywhere else: singing is a passion, not a shop window. She dislikes social networks and is not on them at all. That is not a pose. It is a way of life, an education she received from her family and her parents. She says you do not need to expose yourself in order to live your life. She had never really recorded a professional music project. Things could have gone on that way for a long time.

The meeting

The story changes on a Sunday, in church. That is where Komby Dot IO hears Amanda sing for the first time. The voice is particular enough to provoke an immediate reaction: something had to be tried with it. Amanda was not an artist looking for a producer. She had been to no casting, and she had no particular reason to upend a life in which music had found its place without becoming a job. She had to be convinced. It took several Sundays.

Sunday after Sunday, Komby Dot IO comes back to the church. Amanda knows exactly why, and the situation eventually makes her smile: every week, the same man returns to listen to this voice and to persuade the person who owns it to walk into a studio, something she had never really considered. The offer stays simple. No promise of a career, no talk of success, no contract. “You have nothing to lose. Come to the studio.” Then: “Come with me to the studio. I’ll take care of everything. You don’t have to pay. We record and we see what happens.” The debate is a long one. Komby Dot IO tells her that, as an artist, the exposure she refuses might become hard to avoid. She is not convinced of that. She only agrees to try.

The first studio

Next stop, Tileyard. For the first time, this voice shaped by choirs, churches and private events stands in front of a microphone, in a recording session. Until then it had existed only in the moment. That first session marks a change: she is no longer only someone who likes to sing, heard now and then at a ceremony. An artistic identity begins to appear. It is also the moment when the story of Amanda Leen and Komby Dot IO really starts.

An artist who arrived by another road

Amanda’s path is particular precisely because it does not match the usual script. She did not grow up aiming to be famous. She did not queue for auditions hoping to be spotted. She does not come from a talent show, and she did not build her story on social networks, which she refuses. For years she simply developed her voice where music was already part of her life: at school, in choirs, in churches and at private events. Drawing, sculpture and the piano fed the rest. Then someone heard her, in the right place, at the right time.

Amanda Leen and Komby Dot IO

The story with Komby Dot IO therefore begins almost by chance. A church in London, a voice, a meeting, several Sundays of persuasion, then a yes. That first yes takes Amanda to the studio and opens a stage unlike anything she had known, without erasing what formed her: music before the show, emotion before the image, a voice before everything else. Amanda Leen had never really looked for the light. Her voice is what found it.
